GA4: an "AI assistants" channel (CitedBy, citedby.eu/blog/ga4-ai-referral-traffic) 1. Admin > Data display > Channel groups > Create new channel group. 2. Add new channel, name it: AI assistants 3. Add condition group: Source matches regex (paste the line below) 4. Save channel, then Reorder: drag AI assistants ABOVE Referral, then Apply. GA4 puts traffic in the first channel it matches, so the order matters. Starter regex (hostnames of well-known assistants; check it against YOUR report): (chatgpt|openai|perplexity|claude|gemini|copilot) Before you rely on it: - Open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, set the dimension to Session source / medium, and look for the assistant names above. - Add any source you actually see (for example a new assistant) to the regex. - Remove anything that matches a source that is not an assistant. - Sources that carry no referrer show as direct and cannot be recovered. Needs an Editor role on the property. Custom channel groups apply to past data.
